All of the boards provide a spanning "puzzle," perhaps more appropriately called a problem.
The idea is for you to place pieces onto the board so that no additional pieces can be placed on the board. You can move the pieces around on the board. The problem is that you want to use as few pieces as possible.
With the pentomino pieces on the standard boards, it should be relatively easy to come up with solutions for 8 or more pieces. See how few you can use!
To get a better handle on what's going on, you can have the computer find a spanning for you. It uses a very simple (and far from optimal) algorithm. Simply select FIND SPANNING from the COMMANDS menu.
For a given board, it always finds the same spanning. Usually, this will be about 7 or 8 pieces. You should be able to do better.
Note that your personal best spanning is placed in parentheses at the bottom of the screen.
